Johnny doesn’t remember much when it came to his childhood in London. Often times when asked what it was like Johnny had many things to say but they were all perfectly short and simple. Rehearsed. His favourite things to say were ‘it was cold’ or ‘beautiful but old’ but he never really elaborated. It was always enough to those who asked and god, he was grateful for that.Yes, his childhood in London was cold and yes, it was beautiful and old. But it was also his waking nightmare filled with expectations, roles to fulfil and identity that needed forging, broken down and remoulded in one way and another just to fit in. Look like this; no, not like that; don’t speak like that; why don’t you remember that anymore; don’t be so sensitive; grow up; don’t be so stuck up; follow us; follow them; be you but less you. Two worlds collided. Two cultures. Johnny was one, pulled back and forth trying to fit in both. It ended up breaking him. It ended up making him hate who he was when he didn’t even know what and who he was.London was cold, beautiful and old. But it was also cruel and unforgiving to a child so young, so clueless and so lost. Identity blurred and so was his state of mind and the way he saw himself physically that hurting himself was a way to make himself present in reality for a moment. Expectations that every fibre of him plummet. His parents saw it first but ignored it. When it got worst they sought after help but help directly from them never came. He wasn’t a big enough problem to be dealt with. It got worse and worse.London was cold but that one night it was burning. Remember the great fire of London? In the back of Johnny’s mind from that night, that was what he wanted. A great fire. In his bedroom. In front of him. To engulf him forever. It was like a fever dream. It was like something had took over his body and flicked the lighter the next second. No hesitation. It started small. Then it grew. It was beautiful. It was wild. It was uncontrollable. And it was free.Johnny doesn’t remember anything else after that night. Just muffled echoes of his parents’ screams from outside his door begging him to open up the door and get out as the fire spread. Then darkness.His parents moved him back to Korea thereafter in the hopes that maybe being back there will root him in place. His dad stayed with him for a few months before giving him up to his grandparents. Loving and doting, the opposite of his parents. But Johnny never felt that he deserved it after what he did. It was in the local news. 11 year-old Korean kid sets fire to his own home. Suicide? Or attempted familicide? It was buried. With parents who could afford anything, the story was contained and so was Johnny in Korea. He stayed with his grandparents but eventually left them and left school. School was the last thing in his mind.From 15, he worked in the garage for his uncle.When he was 19, he found the will to better himself.Placing himself in night school, Johnny studied harder than he ever had. Intellect came naturally to him. It was like he never left school. He picked everything up much to the shock of many who doubted and ridiculed him.He passed. Got his certificates and eventually went on and earned a place at a prestigious law school. Johnny was determined to become better. To achieve great things.
From late nights in libraries and his never-ending determination to prove himself in his studies but also his internship at one of the biggest firms in the city, soon Johnny finds himself passing the bar and graduating with high honours.Now, Johnny works at the same firm he interned at despite other firms fighting for him, attempting to bribe him with anything they can offer under the sun. At work, Johnny thrives. He shines in a different way, fighting for justice to those who cannot do it on their own. Johnny was aligned with those who he knew in his heart were innocent and he will fight for it and never back down. Everyone who goes against him in court already knew they will lose. Johnny was tough. His words were sharp and often times poisonous but with good intentions. He is feared, the model lawyer for everyone. But with his success comes enemies intent on bringing him down and finding his kryptonite.What they don't know is that its his past that remain haunting him, threatening what he has built. There are times where it was just a faint memory and he could live with it. Other times it creeps up on him before it hits him again, forcing him to remember.Beautiful and wild.Burning.Uncontrollable.
